RESOURCE

OF THE

WEEK

ACTIVELY LEARN

Actively Learn is an app that Edmodo has curated, which allows you to search and upload stories and articles. The magic is in the user-friendly ability for both student and teacher to annotate the text, create a discussion around close readings, and for the teacher to add varied questions that can be graded and easily added to the Edmodo grade book.

I'm still acclimating myself to this resource, but here's why I love it:

  • It works pretty seamlessly on the iPad

  • It allows students to highlight and annotate, and allows other students to see those notes (if the original note taker allows it)

  • Each annotation can be categorized by ELA standard (each standard has a color)

  • It allows you to ask students questions, and students can't look past the question until they answer it

  • It uses your Edmodo information, which saves those extra clunky steps

  • It's easy to grade and see data

  • It allows students to explore and find their own articles of interest, and keeps a reading log for them (time spent reading; words looked up; etc)

  • They have interesting articles and lots of stories

There are a few drawbacks that I've noticed so far, but almost all of them have to do with not having the pro (paid) version of the app:

  • You can only upload three of your own PDFs per month (unless you have the pro version)

  • Some of the data reports are restricted unless you have the pro version

I'm working on a tutorial, for anyone who uses Edmodo.
